ABOUT THE COURSE

Brave Studios 1 year Film and TV course for Teenagers is an intensive and comprehensive study of Acting for the Camera. This course will give participants the opportunity to prepare themselves for the professional industry. Our aim is to equip the actor with a greater sense of personal insight and understanding of self in order to create performances based solidly in truth.

Created by Brave Studios’ owners Elle Mandalis and Damien Fotiou, this is a course designed by industry professionals who understand the demands and expectations of what it takes to be a working Actor. Having worked in the industry for over twenty years both Elle and Damien have extensive experience as performers and peformance training facilitators. Their close connection and involvement with the running of the course ensures that you receive the highest quality training possible in a safe and nurturing environment.

Brave Studios prides itself on the personal attention we give to each and every student. In order for our students to receive individual attention and extensive hours working on the floor, we cap our class sizes to 12 students – A rare and luxurious opportunity!

THE PROGRAM

SCENE STUDY

Acting students will have the wonderful opportunity to train with with many various talented and sought after Acting teachers including Damian W HowlingMark Hennessy , and Lyndelle Green. All teachers independently offer unique techniques and methods of training including Meisner, Practical Aesthetics, Chubbuck and Stanislavsky to give students the opportunity to broaden their acting skills and tools. Although the teachers are all individual in their training, they are working together towards achieving the same goal – To get to the truth of a scene and character.

Students are assigned scenes throughout the course which both compliment and challenge them in order to become more versatile in their craft. The program will take you from Script Analysis right through to filming in our in-house studio. A crucial element of our training is being filmed and making this footage available for our students to watch in their own time for self critiquing. This enables self reflection and understanding ones own truth. Here at Brave Studios we are always driving you towards your own truth and finding ways to bring it into your work as it is an essential skill to have as an actor. We pride ourselves in creating a safe environment to work in as we believe the best performances come from feeling safe enough to take risks and to create a sense of play to explore ones self.

VOICE

Vocal training is one of the most critical aspects of actor training. Without using your voice correctly in everyday life, your craft will only be half full. The voice component to the Teenage Acting Course is helmed by Leonardo Canales. This class will enable the actor to learn how to access their voice properly, improve their vocal clarity, diversity and power. By training the voice, the actor is able to access emotions, use their breath and deliver a stronger, more confident performance.

US ACCENT

With the US market being so accessible now for Australian actors through Self Testing for international projects, the necessity for actors to perfect the US accent is paramount. Tyler Coppin, our US dialect coach will teach students how to perfect a neutral American accent from learning the accent through to applying it to text in front of the camera. He will help all students prepare for the US Self test audition with LA casting Director Caitlin Wells.

ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE

As actors you need to be able to keep yourself in co-ordination even when playing a character who is not co-ordinated. You need to find the connection through you, in order to connect with an audience whether that be live or through the camera.
As teenagers, a lot of your time is spent behind a computer or looking down at your phone disconnecting your body from interaction with the outside world. Through Alexander Technique students will reconnect with their bodies and find their natural alignment and centre of gravity to be present in the work.

The Alexander Technique helps you learn to take care of yourself in every activity that you do. It helps you find ease in your work, freedom in your voice, and an openness to performance. Australia’s foremost practitioner of The Alexander Technique, Penny McDonald will guide students through every expect of the technique which has become absolutely indispensable for any serious actor.

MOVEMENT

Understanding your own body, the actors instrument, is absolutely fundamental in understanding yourself both as a human being and as a performer. Movement training not only gives you physical freedom and expressive power but helps you connect to a deep inner truth.

Our movement training component is run by the renowned teacher Anne O’Keefe. Her exhaustive knowledge of movement techniques and work from some of the worlds greatest teachers gives students a complete and integrated physical training.

AUDITIONING TECHNIQUES

The key to securing any acting job is through a successful audition. As something which most actors do more often than anything else auditioning is the key to a successful acting career. Brave Studios’ director Damien Fotiou teaches the Auditioning component of The Teenage Acting Course. With more than twenty years experience auditioning as a professional actor and many years experience behind the camera casting and producing self tests, Damien will guide students through the audition and also give students a unique insight as to what happens behind the camera in the casting process.

All students get the opportunity to work with Casting Director Megan Darcy from Nick Hamon Casting to get a truthful insight into how the casting industry works and what’s to be expected as an actor. Megan’s extensive knowledge and experience of the casting world is invaluable for all acting students wanting to know the ins and outs of the industry.

MASTER CLASSES AND WORKSHOPS

Students have the exclusive opportunity to be a part of 2 X 2day Master classes throughout the year.

ANA KOKKINOS MASTERCLASS – Australian Filmaker and Director

This intensive 2 day acting masterclass with one of Australia’s most acclaimed Film Directors, ANA KOKKINOS gives our students hands on experience to work with a Director. This is an exclusive opportunity for participants to work with Ana and learn her unique process for bringing a script to life; a process which can be transferred and used with any script from audition through to performance.

Over the last twenty years Ana has firmly established herself as one of our most innovative and creative film makers. With titles such as ‘Only the Brave’, ‘Head On’  and ‘Blessed’ to her name Ana has firmly stamped her mark on the Australian film making landscape. Her television credits have garnered her widespread acclaim from actors for her process and eye for detail, something which is sadly lacking in today’s industry.

AUDITIONING WORKSHOP – DAY 1
US SELFTEST WORKSHOP with Caitlin Wells

All students will self test for Los Angeles Casting Director Caitlin Well in our in house studio to be followed up with a live Skype session to receive direct feedback along with honest, constructive criticism. You will be taken through the casting process from not only the actors perspective but also the standpoint of the decision makers.

This is a rare privilege for students in a training environment to be exposed to decision makers not only within Australia, but world wide and start to build industry relationships to help you with your carrier as an actor. This will give you the tools to help win your self test auditions, along with providing you with industry insight into what goes on behind the scenes when a production is being cast.

After having worked as a Casting Associate for Warner Bros. feature casting department, Caitlin brings her unique Hollywood experience and connections to Brave Studios and our students.

Caitlin’s experience on U.S Films includes:

BATMAN v SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE (2016)

KNIGHTS OF THE ROUNDTABLE: KING ARTHUR (2016)

TARZAN (2016)          PAN (2015)       MAN OF STEEL (2013)

Working on major US feature films and directly collaborating with top tier directors and producers, has provided Caitlin with an awareness and insight into the Hollywood casting process that she is excited to share with Australian actors. Having worked extensively with actors in the casting room but also receiving umpteen self-taped auditions throughout her casting career, Caitlin knows just what it takes to get noticed in a self test scenario.

AUDITIONING WORKSHOP – DAY 2
CASTING WORKSHOP with one of Melbournes top Casting Directors

This workshop will cover auditioning skills and techniques to help you better your audition process. You will learn how to approach a script and receive invaluable insights from a casting director’s perspective. Many actors leave from an audition never knowing why they may not have won the role. This is a great way for you to receive feed back from a casting director to help you move into the right direction. All students will work with one of Melbourne top Film and TV casting directors.

SHOWREEL AND HEADSHOT PACKAGE

To ensure students are ready when they graduate, a showreel and headshots are vital. A video production team will film and edit a professional showreel for each student and include stunning headshots by our extremely talented photographer Pier Carthew. This is to help students approach industry professionals on completion of this course and to help them showcase their work for potential auditions.

SHOWCASE

The culmination of twelve months of hard work is a showcase  screening of our students final showreel scenes.

The Showcase includes a live filmed “screen-test” and screening of each students showreel filmed professionally in Term 3. All these filmed components will be sent to Casting Directors and acting Agents Australia wide for potential representation.
