Alexander Technique

Voice/Movement 6 weeks

“As long as you have this physical tenseness you cannot even think about delicate shadings of feeling or the spiritual life of your part. Consequently, before you attempt to create anything it is necessary for you to get your muscles in proper condition, so that they do not impede your actions.”

Constantine Stanislavsky, An Actor Prepares

Hugh Jackman talks about the usefulness of the Alexander Technique for actors. The Actors Studio

The Alexander Technique is a revolutionary method of postural adjustment that is popular with actors, musicians and people experiencing tension or injury.

Its use is twofold for actors:

First, it enables actors to be fully present and tension-free, enabling their body and voice to be completely connected.
Second, it enables actors to access to different physicalities without filling their body with tension.

The Alexander Technique also helps you learn to take care of yourself in every activity that you do. It helps you find ease in your work, freedom in your voice, and an openness to performance.

WHAT IS THE ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE?

Imagine a toolkit full of gadgets ready to be used anytime, that’s the Alexander Technique.

The Technique is taught in most reputable performing arts institutions around the world. Its basis lies in Alexander’s discovery that a certain dynamic relationship of the head, neck and torso is the main factor in determining the most efficient use and functioning of the body. As we become more aware of this dynamic balance, we can begin to change habitual patterns of movement which are stressful to us.

The Technique teaches conscious awareness of use and functioning of the entire organism by preventing unnecessary muscular effort and tension. It also allows the expansion and lengthening of the total muscular system.

Where did it come from?

Alexander was an actor who lost his voice. Through his journey to fix his voice he realised that he had caused the problem through tension and postural habits that stopped him from being able to co-operate with the natural design of the body. He knew he had to change how he used his body, and the process of how you bring about change is what makes the Alexander Technique such a gift for performers.

The incredible Actor/Voice and Alexander Teacher Leonardo Canales will guide students through every expect of the technique which has become absolutely indispensable for any serious actor.
