US Accent Course Level 1: Technique

This American Accent course is for the advanced actor wanting to learn how to do an authentic US Accent!

Self Testing for US productions has fast become the norm in Australia. Perfecting the American Accent is crucial to getting Actors over the line. We often find actors self-testing for US productions can lose elements of performance due to a lack of confidence and ability in their US accent. This American Accent course will set you up with the foundations you need to get you to understand the US accent.

Learning and perfecting a Standard American accent takes time, dedication and a lot of practice. It’s a wise decision to start learning one early so that in time and with practice, your accent becomes second nature. Part of you.

The ability to speak in a flawless Standard American accent is essential for every actor. Nowadays, film and television production companies commonly cast American roles using non-American actors. In order to land the role, your Standard American accent must sound truly authentic.

This course will teach you the foundations of the General American Accent technique. It is for confident and advanced actors only who have never worked on the US Accent before, or feel that they will need more work on the fundamentals of the accent before they apply it to scene work.

  • Vocal focus and sound placement
  • General American cadence, emphasis and stresses
  • Muscularity and resonance
  • The dominant American ‘R’ sound
  • Vowel sounds and consonants
  • Nuances and observations
  • Applying General American directly to dialogue
  • Scene Work using General American
  • You will also receive a link to view your scenes filmed in class, via Brave Studios’ Vimeo page for self-critiquing in your own time.

  • Successful audition at Brave Studios with one of the Acting School Directors.
  • Participants must be aged 17 years and above

Therefore, it is imperative that all students have a strong command of English as there will be constant reading and learning of text.   • Payment Options

    *We do not take payment through the website. Payment can either be made over the phone via credit card, or via direct deposit. The account details will be sent to you in an invoice once you enrol.
    *If paying a deposit, please note that the balance for the course is due 2 weeks prior to course commencement. Your deposit must be received before your place can be confirmed
    *STUDENT LOYALTY DISCOUNT - If you have completed 3 or more 8 week courses with Brave Studios you may be eligible for an ongoing 10% discount. This only applies to Beginner and Actors Workshop 8 week courses commenced from 2013 onwards.

  • CONDITIONS OF ENROLMENT

    BALANCE: Any outstanding balance must be paid 2 weeks prior to the course start date.  
    REFUND POLICY: Notification of cancellation must be given at least 14 days prior to class commencement for course fees or deposit to be refunded. If you have enrolled but do not notify us of cancellation 14 days prior to the commencement of the course, your deposit and/or any fees paid will be retained by Brave Studios. No refunds will be given for cancellations made after course commencement or during the run of the course. Brave Studios reserves the right to cancel any class in which case fees will be refunded in full.
    12 MONTH PROGRAMS- All payments must be made on the agreed date specified on the Invoice. Should you withdraw from the course after the commencement date, any fees paid will be retained, no refund will be applied and you are obliged to pay the balance of all fees owing. 
    Payments for the 3 hour introductory workshop and 1 day auditioning workshops are non-refundable.  
    TRANSFER POLICY: If a student has paid a deposit and wishes to transfer into another course as opposed to receiving a refund, the transfer should take place within 12 months of the initial course start date, given that at least 14 days notice has been received. It is the students responsibility to inform us of their availability for new course dates. The student will also be subject to any course fee increases made during that time.
    VIDEO POLICY: All class footage filmed and photographed at Brave Studios remains the property of Brave Studios and must not be used for any purpose unless permission is sought and granted by Brave Studios Directors.
